Summer Weddings

January 25, 2012

So I have three summer weddings this year.  They all take place between Memorial Day and Labor Day (or maybe just a smidge after Labor Day, but the wedding’s in the Vineyard so I’m going to count it as a summer wedding).  I’ve been dreaming of warmer days while playing around in my endless internet closet.  What do you think of this as an outfit for one… or dare I say it multiple weddings?  And yes for those of you that know me I am fully aware that I am one of the palest people on the earth.  I would plan to spend some healthy time in the sun (with SPF) and then use a serious bronzer.

  A Winter Skin Saver

January 19, 2012

I’ll keep this post short-ish and sweet.  Johnson’s Baby Oil has literally saved my skin this winter.  My mother has been using baby oil for years as a moisturizer and I while I always knew it was a good idea I couldn’t quite stomach the smell.  It reminded me too much of all my years babysitting.  Oh a whim when I was in CVS I took a stroll down the baby aisle and saw that Johnson’s now has multiple smells.  When I saw the Shea & Coconut Butter I was immediately hooked.  I looooooove the smell of coconut butter.

On the recommendation of a friend in the field of dermatology I now keep a bottle in my shower and apply is liberally after lightly toweling dry.  My dermatologist friend said to leave a light layer of water on your skin and your oil, or moisturizer, will lock in that layer of water giving you an even deeper and richer moisturizing experience.

I know I dole out a lot of advice in my posts, but this one is a must try.  It costs next to nothing and you will immediately see the difference.  The only word of warning I give is to make sure you’re firmly planted on your bath mat while applying.  The first time I used the oil I applied it in the shower and the next tie I got in I almost slipped and knocked my head.  Not pretty.

I Heart Parfums By Serge Lutens

January 14, 2012

On this chilly Saturday in January I wanted to send out some love to my favorite parfumere, Serge Lutens.  I noticed this morning that my supply of his amazing perfumes is running dangerously low.  Over the past few years I have collected three amazing scents; Datura Noir, Un Bon Vanille, and Un Lys.

I bought my first Lutens scent, Datura Noir, on my inaugural trip to Fred Segal over six years ago.  It was amazing the amount of compliments I received as soon as I started wearing it.  Over the years I slowly started buying additional scents, starting with the Un Bois Vanille.  It is the perfect stand alone scent, but you can also layer it over another flavor to add a sweet undertone.  The last variety I purchased was the Un Lys.  I had been out to visit a close friend in San Francisco and had been borrowing hers for the weekend and was so sad to say goodbye to the flowery scent that I rushed out to buy it once back in Boston.  It was the scent I wore at my wedding so it will always hold a special place in my heart.

So if you find yourself in need of a new perfume or you’re just bored one weekend afternoon I would recommend heading over to your local Barney’s and playing around in the parfumerie department.

PS. If you’re someone that is madly and deeply in love with me and are ever looking for a gift idea… a gift of Un Bon Vanille will never be met with anything but ear to ear smiles and a big kiss :*

  Thank You Kate’s Mom

January 10, 2012

I’m typically not one to post photos of myself, but I wanted to make an exception so that I could say a very big thank you to my friend Kate’s mom.  She made me this awesome scarf.  It is the second time she has hand knitted me one of these awesome “round all in one neck scarves”… okay, there has to be a better name for it…I just checked out  J Crew and they call them snoods.  What the what!  I don’t think I can get behind calling my “round all in one neck scarf” a snood so for now it will either remain nameless or be the thing with many names.  Anyway, I want to say thank you so, so, so, so much to Mrs. Adeletti for her loving generosity.  Last time I wrote a thank you note, but this time I felt like I a little bit bigger thank you was in order.

For all of my friends out there that like to tease me about the wallpaper in my kitchen, please refrain.  As much as the designer in me initially cringed every time I walked in the door I have now found peace with the hilariously out of scale 1940s farm life images.

  I Heart My First Bard

January 9, 2012

I had my first coffee, or should I say work of art, this afternoon at Bard Coffee on Middle Street in Portland.  I fell in love.  The staff was so friendly and helpful.  I’ve been ordering grande lattes and extra hot skinny whatevers for years but I didn’t always know exactly what I was ordering.  I spent some quality time with one of the baristas and they talked me through the milk to espresso ratios of each of their drinks and showed me the cup type and size for each drink.  I was fascinated that their was art and food science behind what they were doing back behind the bar.  Don’t get me wrong I never thought that just any joe schmo could whip up a really good cup of coffee, but I had been living in a bit of a dreamland on what was happening to create all those drinks I’ve had in my life.  Once I finally decided on what I was going to have they created the drink you see below (this is not some fancy photo I found on the Internet, just a little snapshot from my phone).  What you see below is a cappuccino with a blend of skim and whole milk.  Yum Yum!

I was inspired by the adorable heart they created out of the foam of my cappuccino and by the coffee.  So I spent a bit of time perusing Etsy to see what the artists out there created by blending these two things and here are some gems I found.  Perhaps you have someone in your life that loves coffee that you could spoil with an out of the blue gift… or I heard through the rumor mill that a heart inspired holiday is coming up soon.

  New Year’s Resolutions

January 4, 2012

It’s that time of year again, time to make your New Year’s Resolutions.  I know that some people dread the start of a new year, but I always welcome the end of the holidays and the beginning of January.  I love the idea of wiping the slate clean and starting off fresh in a new year.  I was also always the girl that got a bit too excited to buy all new school supplies at the beginning of each new school year.  In an effort to take my resolutions a bit more seriously this year I thought I would share them with you.  I promise I will check in periodically to let you know how I’m doing and share any fun stories.  Please note the not so subtle message in the image below… I’ve created an ambitious list.

Erin’s List of Resolutions

Eat Vegan twice a week.
Expand my vegetarian dinner recipes to include 2 Indian dishes, 1 crock-pot stew or rice maker dish, and one pasta dish that isn’t just boiling pasta and heating up sauce.
Perfect four new desserts. I am an absolutely terrible baker. I try and try and try and pretty much fail every time. Not this year!
Start a vegetable garden.
Begin composting.

It was at this point, while reading my resolutions to Zach, that he asked if I was also going to add that I will continue to shave my legs and wash my hair… seeing that all these resolutions were a bit hippy…. not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Deepen my yoga practice by attending a minimum of two classes a week.
Break 24 minutes in a 5K Race.
Set a baseline time at an official 10K Race and then break that time by 2 minutes in a subsequent race.
Run more than 10 miles in one training run in sub 9 minute pace.
Learn to cross country ski.

Read at least two books a month.
Finally finish 100 Years of Solitude.  I know, I know… it’s a masterpiece… but in all seriousness I’ve been stuck on page 150 for about three months.

Wish me luck!

December 24, 2011

Although this isn’t an actual picture of Charlie, he approves of the misbehavior that occurred to procure this photo.  Merry Christmas Eve!
