  Building Blocks

November 29, 2011

Thanks to my mother-in-law for passing along today’s top circulated New York Times article “With Blocks, Educators Go Back To Basics” (definitely worth the time to read the full article… I of course immediately wanted to see what blocks were out there, perhaps in time for the holidays, to share with my readers).  It was a fascinating article about the educational advantage of using the wooden block toys that first became popular in the early 20th century.  “As in fashion, old things often come back in style in education. The Parents League workshop reflects a renewed faith in unit blocks — those basic, indestructible wooden toys created in the early 1900s — sweeping through some elite swaths of New York’s education universe. While many progressive private and public schools have long sworn by blocks, more traditional institutions are now refocusing on block centers amid worries that academic pressure and technology are squeezing play out of young children’s lives.”

I was always a fan of block toys while growing up.  Perhaps it’s not to hard to understand why I gravitated to art and architecture classes during school and now have a career in design. Ideally your parents have saved your set from childhood for you to pass along to your little ones… but just in case I’ve complied a few resources for purchasing a new set.

This isn’t a complete set of blocks, but it’s an adorable way to get started.  I love the packaging, very pretty!

Expanding a bit from the traditional building blocks, here is another set of blocks but this time with the alphabet.  Too Cute.

I had the pleasure to have worked closely with Erin for the past year, and was constantly coveting her wardrobe selections! She truly has a sense for all things pretty, whether it is at the scale of a large commercial interiors space, or as detail-oriented as the perfect fashion accessory. Needless to say, her enthusiasm for style and design is contagious, and I am excited to be a part of this incredible blog!

I wanted to share a few things that I have recently been drooling over. While they may not be relevant to one another, they are all individually delicious! And in the spirit of this weekends shopping splurges, I will share a great gift idea for the pretty girl on your list!

This is such an adorable bracelet by Hive and Honey. I recently discovered it on Piperlime, and it is a great steal, at just $28!

While looking for an interesting mosaic tile, I came across this exquisite ikat mosaic by New Ravenna. I have an absolute obsession with the textural beauty that ikat can add to a space, so this is a favorite for me!

Have a holiday party to attend this year? Dazzle them with this stunning geometric sequins dress by Alice and Olivia.

Finish the holiday look with a pair of luscious red satin flats like these from J Crew.

  Happy Birthday Mom!

November 21, 2011

Etsy Nidhi Shop: Braids, Mother and Daughter

I wanted to wish a very special lady happy birthday today.  Happy Birthday Mom!!!!!  She always made all of my birthday’s so special.  I remember my early birthdays at the rollerskating rink, then my tween years when she hosted gobs and gobs of my friends for slumber parties and my more recent birthdays enjoying a good meal at a favorite restaurant.  No matter what we ended up doing my Mom always made my day so special.  I hope the pizza party and multiple grandchildren helped make this year as special for you.  It never fails that I end up raiding my mother’s closet whenever I visit.  So in honor of my Mom and her great taste I’m going to share two of her current favorite things.

Kate Hines Pearl Jewelry: Oxford Necklace

Make sure to spend some time on Kate Hines’ website.  The jewelry is very classic, as pearls often are, and beautiful.  It would make a great gift for someone special this holiday season (cough, Dad, cough).

Ann Taylor Loft: Ruched Long Sleeve Tee

Long sleeve Tee from Ann Taylor Loft is another classic item.  You can always find my Mom in one of these brightly colored tees.  They’re comfortable, versatile, not too costly and they can be dressed up or down to take the look from day to night or from weekend to workday. (PS. They look great with pearls!) Looks like they are having  sale today online for 40% off.  I wonder if they new my Mom was such a loyal shopper?!?

Just in case no one gets the chance to make you your favorite lemon cake today I thought I could at least send you a cyber cake.  I know I learned my love of citrus, especially sweet citrus treats from you.  Next time we’re together we’ll treat ourselves to something tangy.

I love you and Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!
